Handmade Latin American traditional dress

A handmade traditional dress is an investment in your heritage — and with a little care, it will stay vibrant and well-fitting for years of celebrations. Here's how to wash, dry, iron, and store your dress, plus tips for the special pieces like embroidery, tembleques, and hats.

Everyday Washing & Drying

For our flag-color fiesta dresses (polyester or poly-cotton), follow these basics — and always check the care note on your specific product:

  • Wash cool — hand-wash in cold water or use a gentle machine cycle. Cold water protects the bright colors.
  • Mild detergent, no bleach — harsh detergents and bleach fade and weaken the fabric.
  • Wash whites separately — mostly-white styles (and those with ribbons) do best washed on their own.
  • Air-dry — hang or lay flat to dry, away from direct sun, and skip high-heat drying to protect the shape.
  • Cool iron — press on low on the reverse side to smooth the skirt before an event.

Caring for Embroidery & the Pollera

Hand-embroidered pieces like the Panamanian pollera are heirlooms and deserve extra care: hand-wash gently in cool water or dry-clean fine embroidery, dry flat and out of the sun to protect the threadwork, and store folded with acid-free tissue or on a padded hanger. See the full pollera guide.

Caring for Tembleques & Beadwork

Never machine-wash tembleques or beaded hair pieces. Dust gently with a soft, dry brush, reshape any bent wire by hand, and store each piece flat in a padded or compartmented box away from moisture and heat. More on tembleques.

Caring for Hats

For straw and woven hats (like the sombrero vueltiao or pava), wipe clean with a dry cloth, keep them away from prolonged moisture, and store them somewhere cool and dry so they hold their shape.

Storing Between Celebrations

  • Use a padded hanger so the skirt keeps its fullness, or fold with acid-free tissue.
  • Keep dresses in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.
  • Store gold jewelry, tembleques, and accessories separately in padded boxes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I machine-wash my dress?

Many of our polyester dresses can be machine-washed on a gentle, cold cycle, but hand-washing is gentlest. Always check the care note on your specific product, and dry-clean fine embroidery.

Will the colors fade?

Wash cold with mild detergent and dry out of direct sun, and the colors will stay vibrant for years.

How do I keep a white dress looking fresh?

Wash it on its own in cold water (or dry-clean), and avoid bleach, which can yellow the fabric over time.

How should I store tembleques?

Flat, in a padded box, away from moisture and heat — never washed.
